Virtua Fire & Rescue Standard Operating Procedure
CHECK-IN, STAGING, & REHAB

PURPOSE

To establish safe operating procedures for a system of initial placement for personnel and on-going placement of personnel not assigned to specific tasks during the incident.

PROCEDURE

  • Responder Check-in

Once a responding team has checked in with the Incident Commander, they will stay in the staging area until given an assignment. This procedure will be followed to prevent the Incident Commander from being inundated with requests for assignment.

  • Staging and Rehab Area
    • Staging is a location away from the IDLH where personnel are immediately available for assignment by the Incident Commander.
    • Rehab is a location away from the IDLH for operations personnel to rest, receive refreshment, and obtain a medical evaluation.
    • A Staging/Rehab area will be established for available personnel. The Staging/Rehab area will be established by the Incident Commander to locate resources resting after assignments or companies not currently assigned. Typically for a residential fire incident, the Staging/Rehab area will be established in close proximity to the responding medic unit.
    • The Incident Commander will act as the Staging/Rehab manager until such time as he or she designated that responsibility to another company officer.
